There's been a lot of discussion throughout the NBA recently of the 6' 11 center from Kansas, Joel Embiid and his potential draft stock rising to the number one overall pick in this year's NBA draft. With the Milwaukee Bucks having the worst record in the league, there is a strong chance they'll win the lottery and pick first in the draft. Given the state of mind in Milwaukee and the overall team structure right now, Embiid should not be the choice for the Milwaukee Bucks if awarded the first pick.
The Bucks are going through a rough patch right now and that's an understatement. Every game turns into a blowout. The fundamentals aren't crisp and there are issues within the locker room. The state of Wisconsin has begun to lose faith in the team ever turning around the organization. The idea of cleaning house sounds good, but right now the organization doesn't have the time to wait 3-4 years to develop new players and be relevant. We need signs of improvement now.
Drafting number one overall carries a lot of weight. It needs to be an NBA ready player that can contribute his rookie year and hopefully change the franchise around in a hurry. Drafting Joel Embiid would be nice if we were rebuilding and needed a better rebounding team with a threat inside. The problem with drafting Embiid as a Milwaukee Buck is that he is very raw and at an NBA level he could take 2-3 years to be an elite center. Although we are one of the worst rebounding teams in the NBA, getting a player that will put fans back in the Bradley Center next year is the key.
We need a player like Jabari Parker or Andrew Wiggins that can cover multiple positions on defense and create shots all over the court on offense. Wiggins and Parker are raw and young as well, but have a lot more to offer at the NBA level than Embiid. The roster, as it stands, has a lot of young talent between OJ Mayo, Brandon Knight, John Henson, and Giannis Antetokounmpo. The Bucks need to draft someone that will take the pressure off of the rest of the team to put up points. To make this team better, fans need to be apart of this team and with an outstanding first overall pick that will contribute right away, that will happen.
